Sonicide is a metal trio based in central New Jersey. Members are Alice Axe on guitar, Tim Fonda on drums and Jim Hershey on bass with vocals by all. Though an original band they also have a repertoire of covers as well covering a large variety of hard rock and metal from Steppenwolf to Metallica.
Style
Their powerful sound is a mixture of metal styles.
Strongly influenced by early british metal; bands such as Black Sabbath
and Judas Priest; they a deliver thundering performance, alive with addictive
hooks and riffs. Their straight forward, down to earth, 'party hardy' attitudes
and dark humor abound on stage and are strongly reflected in their image
and song writing. The combined effect gives one the sensation akin to that
of running wildly through the streets on halloween night
History
Sonicide was formed in 1994 as a
cover band playing music by founding metal bands like Sabbath, Zeppelin
and AC/DC. Immediately they began writing their own material and recording
demos in their basement studio. Battling inadequate sound equipment plagued
with feedback, they evolved their style and garnered the name 'Sonicide'.
They then moved their rehearsal to the infamous 'Coup of Doom', a group
of chicken coups converted into rehearsal spaces and home of various other
local bands as well. Enduring freezing temperatures in winter and stifling
heat in summer , they held to a grueling practice regime and recorded the
bulk of what was to be their first full length indie CD 'Death by Sound'.
During this time the health of Sonicide's guitarist Alice began to take
a turn for the worse. In the following years things would prove near fatal
for her and the band as she struggled to survive several tick-borne illnesses
endemic to the area. The band pressed on, playing scattered performances
and growing their online audience with an extensive website and free MP3
downloads of Death by Sound on site such as MP3.com and Soundclick. "Death
by Sound" was also featured on many sites and airplay on internet radio
such as Snakenet Radio. After long years of pain and treatments Alice was
slowly pulled from the reapers grip. They again kicked things into high
gear with a refortified equipment setup, songlist and show schedule.
Current
With the advent of Thunderland Studio,
owned and operated by Alice, they digitally remastered and re-released
Death by Sound in 2003 and are working on a new material to be released
in the spring of 2005. They have a strong web-based following and their
internet presence continues to grow. With over 8000 hits on their MP3.com
site alone they have built a world wide legion of listeners.
The group frequently plays live and have made various appearances, playing venues in and around New Jersey such as The Saint in Asbury Park, The Nail in Pennsylvania, Obsessions , and most recently as an opening act for Anthrax at the legendary Birch Hill all with great response and rapport with their audience.
Sonicide is a refreshing hearken back to the days
of classic metal songs and feel,
while still forging ahead in the modern metal
arena. Enduring many hardship, from grueling rehearsal conditions to near
fatal illness, Sonicide has raged on in the true 'never say die' spirit
of metal.
